McAdoo: I don’t regret staying at UNC following my freshman year

Former UNC basketball star James Michael McAdoo is currently helping the Golden State Warriors plow through the NBA playoffs. Five years ago, however, he encountered a difficult decision that many others now face today.

McAdoo projected as an NBA lottery pick following his freshman year with the Tar Heels. Instead of declaring for the draft, though, he stayed in school for two more years. The forward eventually left the college ranks after the 2013-14 season and went undrafted.

“That was my personal decision,” McAdoo told the David Glenn Show on Tuesday. “I don’t regret it at all.”

McAdoo began his professional career in the D-League before earning a roster spot with the Warriors. He has since won an NBA title and played in the Finals last season.

“Having not gotten drafted and having to go through the D-League, I’ve been on the outside looking in, so now my work ethic is a lot higher,” McAdoo stated. “Honestly, if I would’ve gotten drafted after my freshman year, chances are I would’ve went to a team that’s not as good as the Warriors.”

What’s the former Tar Heel’s advice to any freshmen who remain undecided?

“I think the biggest thing is just realizing what’s on the table. If you’re guaranteed to go first round, I think it’s pretty smart and in your best interest to do that. But, like I said, it depends on your situation. For me, it was different. I loved playing at Carolina. I wanted to continue to better myself as a player. Here I am now, three years into the NBA with a championship and looking to win another one.”
