Is Kaaya first-round material?

It may not last long, but Brad Kaaya and Mark Richt could have a happy and fruitful partnership.

In fact, it could be one of the most splendid marriages of quarterback and coach in Miami history.

The school once celebrated as Quarterback ‘U’ has had a ton of excellent passers. Names like Jim Kelly, Bernie Kosar, Vinny Testaverde, Steve Walsh, Craig Erickson, Gino Torretta and Ken Dorsey were either national champions or Heisman winners, and in Torretta’s case, both.

Now along comes one of their contemporaries. Richt, who was mostly Kelly’s backup in Coral Gables from 1978-82, made his bones as a quarterback guru beginning at Florida State 30 years ago. After tutoring Heisman winners Charlie Ward and Chris Weinke in Tallahassee — and winning a national title as a play-caller in 1999, his second championship on Bobby Bowden’s staff — Richt developed an impressive list of names as Georgia’s head coach.

The Bulldogs had David Greene and D.J. Shockley — two players who won SEC titles — as well as No. 1 overall pick Matthew Stafford and SEC career passing yards leader Aaron Murray. It was no accident that UGA consistently had strong quarterback play.

Richt believes his current pupil is up there with his best.
