Wake Forest entered the spring wondering how its two-headed quarterback situation would play out. Unfortunately, it left the spring with all of the same questions.
Coach Dave Clawson repeatedly reminded people that the Deacons don’t play a game until September and that he’s in no rush to name a starter between junior John Wolford and sophomore Kendall Hinton.
“We want to collect as much information as we can, give them as much time to compete for the job, and we have to name a starter Sept. 1,” Clawson said. “That’s the drop-dead date.”
Wolford has been the starter for his two seasons in the program, starting 10 games last season. But injuries and Hinton’s ability to make big plays opened the door last season.
Wolford completed 61 percent of his passes for 1,791 yards, with nine touchdowns and 11 interceptions. Hinton started twice, completing 52 percent of his passes for 929 yards, with four touchdowns and five interceptions. Hinton also ran 93 times for 390 yards and seven touchdowns.
The struggles of the offensive line have made it difficult to judge either quarterback. The Deacons haven’t been able to protect the quarterback or build any kind of running game to take the pressure off their young signal-callers.
In the spring, Clawson split the quarterback reps down the middle.
