Making sense of Bobby Lutz, NC State and Georgia Tech

It has been a weird week around NC State basketball.

First, CBS Sports’ Gary Parrish reported Tuesday morning that Florida Gulf Coast head coach Joe Dooley was considering taking an assistant coaching job at NC State. At the time, the problem was there was not an opening on the staff.

Then midday Tuesday, reports stated that Bobby Lutz, who has been an assistant at NCSU since Mark Gottfried was hired in 2011, was leaving to take a position on newly hired Georgia Tech head coach Josh Pastner’s staff, setting up the opening for Dooley to come.

By Tuesday evening, NC State sent out a press release indicating that Lutz was taking a position as “Special Advisor to the Deputy Athletic Director for External Operations.”

According to the release, the lengthy job title means that Lutz will have “a variety of administrative duties associated with the men’s basketball program, including assistance with the personal and academic development of student-athlete, housing arrangements, planning and logistics associated with the team’s upcoming foreign tour and other special projects.”

Many assumed that Lutz’s reassignment meant that Dooley’s announcement would come soon thereafter. As of midday Thursday, though, there has been no movement on that front, and the Pack has an opening on its staff before coaches hit the road this weekend for basketball recruiting.
